About Tribal Surf

Founded in 2008, Tribal Surf came about when a group of Southern California surfers simply wanted a better way to organize their surf outings. At the time, there wasn't a California focused online community of surfers so we started our own. I had lived in Orange County while Dave, John and Han Destroyer-of-Boards Solo all lived in the South Bay, Steve in San Clemente, and Chris way down in San Diego. So we needed an easy way for us to figure out where we were all going to surf. Tribal Surf was the answer. In hindsight, we probably didn't need it since we ended up meeting at San O 99% of the time. Since then, Tribal Surf's membership has grown to include surfers from all over California and beyond. And although we come from a large variety of backgrounds and skill levels, we all share a common respect for surf riding.

The whole point of Tribal Surf is simple ... to help out other local surfers. That could be a beginner wanting advice on learning how to surf. Or an experienced surfer wanting to hone his moves. That could also be a surfer wanting to get a business off the ground or publicize their product. And to keep things simple, Tribal Surf does not charge for membership or advertising. All we ask is that you take the time to get to know us and help others as well.

Da Tribal Zine contains our own exclusive features of local surfing icons, gear reviews, and general surfing tutorials. It started when John had given me the heads up that a local shop was donating used wetsuits to a charity that teaches board riding to under-served youth. I got in contact with the organization who graciously agreed to be featured as our first "Local Hero" ... Steve Larosiliere of Stoked Mentoring. Since then, we've had the privilege of featuring other local heroes including Sean Collins, founder of Surfline, and Jim Moriarty, CEO of Surfrider. To help out locals wanting to publicize their products, we began featuring gear reviews as well. More recently, we started featuring tutorials in the "Tribal University" addressing various topics critical to surfing such as etiquette and tides.

The core of Tribal Surf is its forum. Discussions take place here on anything from upcoming outings to asking for and getting advice to just about anything. The forum itself is categorized into discussion topics from regional (Nor Cal and So Cal) sections to a Wahine Style area devoted to women surfers. The other areas of Tribal Surf serve to supplement the forum.

  • The Events section is an open calendar where members can post important dates for outings and other happenings.

  • The Gallery section is where members can share photos and create there own albums.

  • The Quiver section is where we show off our boards.

  • The Gear section is where you can purchase your own piece of Tribal Surf paraphernalia.
