Trip down the coast

Hey folks, my wife and I will be taking a leisurely trip down the coast from Sacramento to LA, and we're trying to decide where to stop. I want at least a couple of the stops to have a nice spot to surf, but we're mainly looking for good hiking and scenery. Cabins or camping would be preferred over hotels if possible. Anyone have some favorite spots to recommend?

When will you guys be up here?

Not sure what days we'll be where yet. It'll be during the week, though.

It's a great place.. its a little ways off the normal path. It was nice though. I enjoyed!

The plan right now is to spend a few days camping in Big Sur, then spend a few days down around Santa Barbara. Should be fun!

Cool man... Ive surfed there too. It can get pretty fun. Just depends if you happen to be there on a swell day or not. Have fun!

I recommend C (California) Street for surfing though definitely check the conditions out because its been crappy lately. Pismo is also kind of fun (camping on the beach, hotels, surfing) and BoarderDave may be able to give you more tips on the Central Coast.

Yeah, Pismo is good too.. just cold water and its a pretty popular dune spot.. so depending on how busy a weekend.. you might end up seeing a lot of trucks and buggies and stuff. Not the most CALM and relaxing atmosphere if thats what you are looking for. heh But good nonetheless.

Big Sur is crazy ... you'd think you left California. Totally cool.

We have been camping at El Capitan (another good spot) for years and got lucky the last time out there in October and hit a nice swell. I usually take my surf rods with me just in case the surf sucks and just kick back and fish....
