puerto rico.. costa rica?

Feb 21 11, 11:19 pm

Whoa, its been a long time since ive been on :( sorry
IM ALIVE thoughhh.. but only surfing about once a week if i could get it in :'(
Ive been pretty busy with all those college admissions deadlines, financial aid deadlines, scholarship applications, etc.
But it is my senior year! and i want to get away from California.

I was thinking of going on an adventure to Costa Rica or Puerto Rico, but I still have a lot of researching to do. I was just wondering if there is a lot of crime in costa rica. I have to present a pretty good argument to my parents if they are going to let me go anywhere alone. I think my friend will come with me, but I looked at some of the surf camps and it seems like a seven day stay is twice the price of the ticket. I don't need wi-fi and .... well really.. if it was cheaper i could do away with a shower. :? I could live in a hut.. ive thought about camping, but that seems a bit dangerous for me seeing I dont have huge frame to intimidate.
Do you guys know where I should stay? Or should I just go to puerto rico where it seems safer? but less surf. I dont really want over head bombs.. sadly. .hahahaa. My surfing has improved since you guys have last seen me but I would rather have some solid 4 -5 footers.

Well solid 4-5 footers on the Costa Rica scale is around 6-8 footers on the California scale. They measure their waves like x1.5 Not much crime from what I heard about. You get the petty tourist theft but thats anywhere.

No need for "re-integration" Han ... there's a handful of us that I consider OG Tribal Surf that will always be part of the family ... and that most definitely includes our resident grom - you! :D

Getting back to your original question, I’ve never been but I have researched quite a bit and I don’t think either Costa Rica or Puerto Rico is necessarily more safer than the other place. Heck, some parts of L.A. are probably way more dangerous.

Anywhere you go, you just gotta keep your wits about you and don’t act like a tourist in public view. Pretend like you know where you are going and if you need directions, ask discretely or inside an establishment like a store or café.

As for lodging, I would highly highly recommend against camping out. I would even vote against a hostel (cheap shared lodging aimed at students). With a little bit of legwork you should be able to find decent lodging at a good price. You don’t have to splurge but I wouldn’t skimp on that part.

Surf trip packages are cool, I’ve never been on one but yeah to your point, they cost as much as the ticket. I would try to get a friend to go with you and hit up one of the more touristy spots. For CR that’s Tamarindo or Jaco – I’ve heard better things about Tamarindo. Research the rainy season as well. That not only effects the surf but also transportation. But if your in either of these places, chances are you can just walk to the beach.

Have fun, be safe and be smart and let us know how your trip goes Han Solo!!!

I'd go for a trip like StyleSurfer posted up about for his Costa trip.. that seemed pretty legit. :D
