Sorry I missed this. I stayed close to home today and went climbing.

Is blackies a reasonably mellow break?

Given that I'm a novice I steer clear of the more aggressive, crowded breaks, and stick with places I'm familiar with.

I generally surf at Cliffs or Bolsa in HB, or Trails (Sometimes Old Man's) at San O.

I'm not really familiar w/ any Newport spots.

I'm going to try and get out Wed. or Thurs. of this week, and possibly sometime next weekend. Not sure where yet.

inlander, if you wanna give this blair a serious consideration i can meet up. i take my son to blackies newport on the weekends because its a good break to learn and he can only surf on weekends. he only likes bolsa and hb when i help him out and push him into waves but havent done that all year. making him paddle and do it all this year.

the blackies crowd is mixed. you have your territorial frequenters who will drop in on anyone, respectful frequenters, sups and a large population of beginners. the whole range of ages too. more longboarders than shortboarders. but my rationale for going there is that there are more beginners than anyone else. so my son will get a decent share of waves to improve. and for the most part the majority of the population is friendly and easier going. alot like most bolsa spots. its usually ridiculously crowded for the amount of rideable waves at times. but i believe its a great environ for my son to quickly learn to select waves and etiquette. plus the fact that it is a fairly gentle break most of the times. but when them strong combo swells with some west in 'em it's a great shortboarding break. steep, fast and shapely.

anyways, just send me a msg when you plan to hit the surf.
