Travelling Surfer - North of San Fran tips???

Feb 28 11, 2:34 am

Hi all
New to your site - like it a lot.
If anybody is willing I'd love to get some local knowledge on good surf spots and cool places north of San Fran. I'm coming to California from Australia in July with my wife and planning to drive north to get some waves and take in some sites.
Would love any tips on where to check for surf (I realise Summer ain't great for waves) and also where to just hang out.
We love getting away from the usual tourist stuff and if the surf community is anything like oz, local surfers usually know the score.
Have read a little about Bolinas and Ocean Beach.

Thanks in advance
Moose from Sydney

Welcome to the site! North of San Fran, eh? Hmm.. I'm not sure there. I'm a SoCal kind've guy (the water is just too cold up there for me), but hopefully some of our resident NorCal surfers can jump in and let ya in on some tips.

Hope to see ya get some good stuff! Have safe travels!

You really need to stop with the cold water Dave. It's not that cold. Not in my suit HAHA!
You are hitting it to far north for me too though. Trifish and Misspriss are up that way near Ocean beach. Well Tri just moved again now he is a little more south.

I agree with Don. I had a good wetsuit, gloves, and booties and I was fine out there yesterday. And the water down south can be just as cold, it just warms up more during the summer.

Bolinas is a fun and has two reef breaks (lately a third one has emerged). The locals take down the signs, but you can check out 2 Mile Surf Shop's website for directions and get a daily surf report, since there aren't any cams.

Have fun!
