SURFING THE HOOK AND SURROUNDING BREAKS (SCRUZ)

Jun 19 11, 10:52 am

Yesterday I surfed the hook, and breaks south of it along the east cliff. The seaweed was interesting, but the waves were great. Inconsistent, but got some good rides in the massive crowd! lol. Anybody surf there? It seemed to get better at the change of tide... any pointers?

Been there many times and I find it to be the best option for longboarders during the summer when the waves are small. I haven't really paid attention to the tides, but I think it breaks best at low/medium tide. The waves here can get pretty ridiculous in the winter, so check the forecast before you go out (this is also when all of the locals come out, so it isn't as fun anyway). Seaweed is a pain in the butt, but it is everywhere. Though 38th Avenue tends to have less of it.

Seaweed is a bittersweet thing. It's a pain in the a$$.. but it cleans up the bump and gives you some smooth waves. I like it.

Yeah I'll take seaweed / kelp beds any day just for the glass.

It does make it glassy, thats for certain. its crowded with all the seaweed... imagine what it would be like if it was no seaweed!

Although when the kelp starts creeping into the lineup, it can get pretty annoying. I remember that happening now and then at Topanga. Worst was getting caught in them while paddling for a wave - like you got weights stuck to your leash. Had to paddle back out with the leash undone otherwise you were towing a whole kelp bed. Sometimes you'd run right into em and stop cold in your tracks. Good times lol.

it would almost be a good idea to get a razor blade fin... lol... might create some hazards... so just kidding :)
