Good luck with learning how to surf. I definitely recommend taking a lesson before you go out on your own. If you google "Surfing Lessons Santa Monica", I know there are a lot of instructors who teach there. As far as TS people who live in South LA, BoarderDave lives in Torrance and Hyuuj (Charlie) lives in Venice Beach. I don't know anything about your size but if you want to be a longboarder, I recommend starting with a longboard. If you eventually want to move down to shorter boards, start on a funboard (7' to 8') as it will make the transition easier. For wetsuits, I recommend a 4/3 because the water can get cold in the winter. In the summer, LA water can be warm enough to wear swim trunks. The best time to go to the beach breaks (places with a sandy bottom) is in the morning before the winds pick up, but the guys around the area would know the breaks better than I do. If you have any other questions let me know or ask specifically in the appropriate forum and people will answer.
