Thanks for all the great advice guys. I'm definitely going to try some of those different techniques. One question though. Are you guys all in agreement that when you turtle roll your hands should be near the nose? Because I was looking at websites and it said to pull down on the middle of the board.

Well, the only reason that I would recommend being at the forward half of the board is so that a bigger wave can't get underneath your board and send you over the falls.
But, this is just my experience, and I also ride an epoxy longboard so I really have to weight it down to have it submerge enough to stay put through a wave.
