LEASH QUESTIONS

I have to buy a Leash. So what Brand do you recommend for a 6'6 fish? I want something super strong.

What lenght do you advise for a 6'6 board?

I think for the most part leashes are leashes. Not sure there’s such a big difference between the materials used for a leash across brands. With that said though, there are “comp” leashes that are noticeably thinner in diameter. I love these. They tend not to get in your way and along with the thinner ankle strap, are much less cumbersome than regular leashes. Downside is they tend to stretch more and can even snap.

As for length, I think the general rule of thumb is same length as your board – so a 6ft would be fine for you. This really comes more into play for a longboard where you need length to walk up to the nose – although purists might argue that leashes shouldn’t be worn at all.

being there are big power inthe surf up there id get a thick big wave leash and 6 ft leash be just fine .

You hit the nail on the head Sol Mon. I dont want a leash breaking on me. At my main spot it's a long swim in and there is a pretty good rip. I am looking for the brand that makes the strongest leash.

They are usually rated for certain wave sizes on the packaging. They make a few that say big wave on them. I know fcs makes one for maverick size waves that is pretty thick. Ive never had a leash snap on me but Ive had the board rope that the leash connects to snap. Its not a fun feeling taking a hard wipeout and realizing you have to paddle a long waves to to shore.

The better option would be to not tie that new leash leader to the board, but instead try to pinch it in a small U, then cram it in the leash cup, then put the end of the leash through BOTH ends so its doubled up so to speak. Im also a fan of the prolite leashes. Ive seen the swivel guards and what not come off the end of the cheaper leashes exposing the metal which is no good. the pro lites i haven't had do that thus far.

I used to just tie mine.. but then I borrowed this board of OldGrom's and he does his with this double loop thing, and it rocks. I think Im going to start doing it on my leashes.

They have similar strength rope at Amateur Radio supply shops if you have one nearby. It's used for tethering large antennas, and is about the same size as the stuff that comes with leashes.

I'd actually go with a 7ft leash...Just to be on the safe side & to know that if something happens & my board swings around it won't hit me...Ouch!!!
