5th trip out and busted the fin and plug.

Sep 27 09, 8:26 pm

Well after 4 hours of surfing on Sunday I bailed on a wave and while in the washing machine my board bumped my leg. I felt the fin bump my leg too. I though , I hope it did not cut my suit. I felt nothing, so I though I should flip my board over just to check it out. I was shocked to see one of my fins laying flat on the board :< . It did not even hit my leg very had at all . The fin snapped off on one plug and pulled the other plug out and ripped the glass with four 1/2" rips in the glass.
The trip (both days) was awesome but ended on a busted fin and board :< .
I think I like the old way better with glassed on fins. I mean I surfed 7 years or so and never busted a fin. With the way things are now in 5 trips with a new board and busted fin :O . Maybe the FCS fins I had were not break away fins, maybe I had break everything fins HAHA!
LMAO! I just can't believe it.
Oh well I got a buddy here on TS that is going to help me get back on the wave. So I feel a little better already.

Hope everyone made it home safe. Good to see ya all again and meet new faces too : )

That blows, Don. Like I was saying though at least that is far more repairable than say breaking your board in half. Definitely get it professionally done though. Fins are always a tricky affair.

You had to have smacked it against something else for it to do that though. I’d imagine it would have cut through your suit before breaking off like that. Unless they are some sort of special break-away fin plug or you’ve got some crazy O’Niell technology there.

DUDE! NO, you sound just like the customer service man at global industries now :D
I can send you the other 5 pics of the fin I just sent him too LOL!
I have not come close to any boards , other people, I back away from waves when others take off to to protect my ONLY board. It bumped my 46 year old leg. That's it. No lie. I don't roll that way.
The fin looks brand new other then busted off, No nicks, not even one scratch on it. I took more pics because the dude said it must have hit a rock hard for that. LMAO! I guess the P90X work outs work LMAO!
That's why I am afraid of this FCS fin crap now. It broke on my leg. if it hit somthing that hard it would have at least left a little scratch on the fin. My suit it fine. I hope this is a FREAK thing because now I will be looking at my fins all the time. WOW! No wonder he thought I lied, you did too LMAO! If anything now I feel burned, riped off, because it did break on my leg. UNREAL this is all bitter to me.
Oh yea it did hit something else other then me, it hit water.

If it makes you feel any more sane, I did a similar thing to my fin a little while ago (see here). Not a scratch on my suit, and I barely felt it until a couple days later when I noticed my leg had a giant bruise on it. No marks anywhere on the board other than the completely ripped out fin box. Might be a blessing and curse. If those were glassed on fins, it might have done more damage to your leg! :/

WOW, after I sent all the pics and everything, I got a long phone call .
They ( GSI ) are going to split the cost or maybe even just take care of it. Even offered up a board to use if I like :O right here in santa cruz. I was upset to say the least. Now I am blown away by the help. WOW! Thats customer service! Very cool.

No kidding, I am stoked!

Looks like I will be taking it in this weekend (waiting for the ok) to Freeline Design Surf Shop in Santa Cruz.
I really am stoked on how they are treating me.
